# LibreChat vs Open WebUI, and the open-source Kortix that runs the work

> LibreChat and Open WebUI both turn many models into one self-hosted chat interface, and a team can run either on its own hardware. Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System we recommend when an agent has to run the job and return finished work.

## Kortix and LibreChat, side by side

The Kortix column quotes Kortix, the LibreChat column quotes its own repository and docs. We recommend Kortix when the job has to run.

| | Kortix (recommended) | LibreChat |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | The open-source AI Operating System | A self-hosted multi-model chat platform |
| Open source | Yes, read it, fork it, audit it | Yes |
| Where it runs | Kortix Cloud, your VPC, or on-prem. Self-host is free | On your own server, or the project's public demo |
| Your configuration | Files in a git repo you own | A YAML config and a browser admin panel |
| Models | Any model provider with your own keys | Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, AWS Bedrock and local models |
| Agents | Agents run on cloud computers and return finished work | No-code agents, skills and MCP tools |
| Isolation | One isolated sandbox per session | Attached code workspaces, marked highly experimental |
| Review path | Session work reaches main through a change request | Work stays in the chat and the agent workspace |

The LibreChat column reflects its own repository and docs, checked October 2026. Open WebUI facts on this page come from its own repository and enterprise page.

## Two self-hosted chat platforms, one shared shape

LibreChat is a self-hosted AI platform that brings many models into one interface: its repository lists Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, AWS Bedrock and local providers, plus agents, skills, MCP tools and an admin panel ([LibreChat's repository](https://github.com/LibreChat-AI/LibreChat)). Open WebUI is a self-hosted chat interface built to run offline over Ollama and any OpenAI-compatible API ([Open WebUI's repository](https://github.com/open-webui/open-webui)). Both give a team a capable chat platform it can run on its own hardware.

Kortix occupies a different layer. Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System: agents, skills, memory and connectors live in one git repo you own, and each session runs on its own cloud computer. Where LibreChat and Open WebUI centre the conversation, Kortix centres the work an agent finishes.

## What a team owns after the install

LibreChat is configured through a YAML file and a browser admin panel, with users, groups and permissions managed live in the running instance ([LibreChat's docs](https://www.librechat.ai/docs)). Open WebUI is configured through admin settings and environment variables on the server. In both cases the team owns a deployment and its data store, and it keeps them running.

With Kortix the team owns a repository. Agents are markdown files, `kortix.yaml` declares the connectors and triggers, and the configuration is diffable like any code. Session work reaches main through a change request, and merge is default-deny for agents.

```sh
$ curl -fsSL https://kortix.com/install | bash
$ kortix init my-agent
$ kortix ship
$ kortix sessions new --prompt "Reproduce issue #142, fix it, and open a change request"
```

## Which one fits

Pick LibreChat for one self-hosted interface across many providers with no-code agents, skills and a live admin panel. Pick Open WebUI for an offline-capable chat and document window with a wide plugin ecosystem. Pick Kortix when the output you need is finished work that lands for review on infrastructure you choose. [Kortix vs Open WebUI](/kortix-vs-open-webui) compares the pair directly, and [Open WebUI alternatives](/best-open-webui-alternatives) widens the field.

## LibreChat or Open WebUI?

### Which is better, LibreChat or Open WebUI?

Both are strong self-hosted chat platforms over many models, and the choice is mostly about fit: LibreChat leans toward many providers and agent tooling with a live admin panel, Open WebUI toward an offline-capable interface with a wide plugin set. Neither is built around an agent that runs a job end to end, and Kortix is the one we recommend for that.

### Do LibreChat and Open WebUI cost anything?

Both are free to self-host, and a team pays for its own server and model calls. LibreChat also offers a free public demo for evaluation only, not for private data. Kortix is free to start on the cloud and free to self-host.

### Can I use my own models with both?

Yes. LibreChat and Open WebUI both connect local and cloud providers and both accept OpenAI-compatible APIs. Kortix works with any model provider with your own keys, the ChatGPT plan you already pay for, or an OpenCode Console account.

### Which of the three can a team self-host?

All three. LibreChat and Open WebUI install on your own server, and Kortix runs on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on-prem, with self-host free.

## Run one job on Kortix and read the change request

Start free, then self-host if you want it on your own box.
